Welcome to our home in Jokkmokk, Swedish Lapland!
We are a Sámi family practising traditional reindeer herding, a way of life that has been part of Sámi culture for generations. Our work and daily lives are closely connected to nature, the changing seasons and the needs of the reindeer.
By staying with us, you can get a glimpse into Sámi culture and everyday life in northern Sweden, while learning about the traditions and responsibilities involved in reindeer herding.
Life here is closely tied to the outdoors, and our plans can change depending on the weather and the reindeer. We are looking for open-minded, reliable people who enjoy nature, are happy to lend a hand and are interested in learning about a different way of life.
We appreciate help with everyday tasks and, depending on the season, activities connected to our reindeer herding.
Tasks may include:
Helping with practical outdoor work and general maintenance
Assisting with everyday household tasks, cooking and cleaning
Helping with seasonal preparations and other jobs around the property
Learning about and, when the timing allows, helping with reindeer-related activities
Reindeer herding depends on the weather, the season and the movement of the animals, so we cannot guarantee that volunteers will take part in hands-on reindeer work during their stay. Flexibility, a positive attitude and a willingness to help where needed are important.
You will stay with us in a home or simple accommodation in the Jokkmokk area. The exact arrangements may depend on the season and our work, so please contact us before your visit to discuss where you will stay and what facilities are available.
Jokkmokk is in Swedish Lapland, surrounded by forests, lakes and wide open landscapes. Life here changes with the seasons, from long summer days to snowy winters and the possibility of seeing the northern lights. This is a rural setting for people who enjoy nature, outdoor life and a quieter pace. Weather conditions can be challenging, especially in winter, so suitable clothing and footwear are essential.
During your stay, you can learn about Sámi culture, traditions and the importance of reindeer herding in Sámi life. We are happy to share our experiences and give you a better understanding of our connection to the land, the animals and the changing seasons. We also enjoy learning about our visitors' backgrounds and cultures. We hope the exchange will be an opportunity to share experiences, spend time together and learn from one another.
